I judge books based on my own set of ratings, which I'll get into below.
★★★★★
This book lives in my brain rent free. I think about it often, it has a place of honor on my bookshelf, I reccomend this book to other people. I enjoyed this book so much I immediately had to go out and see if I could buy a sequel, or another book by that author. It does not mean the book is without flaws, but it means that the flaws were minimal/the book was so good I simply did not care. The vibes were immaculate and I feel like I need to give the author a handshake because their writing speaks to me and my brain.
★★★★
A great book! I had very few, if any, issues with it, and found it enjoyable. The story is original and/or interesting, the writing and pacing and good, characters are developed and feel real. I have no regrets about reading this book. Everything about the book meshes well together and it has several strong points.
★★★
The book was good! Maybe it missed the mark with pacing or characterization, but overall it was still a neat book to read. Writing has to be at least decent, the plot has to be interesting, and issues have to be minimal. It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to read smoothly and allow me to buy into the premise of the book.
★★
The book was okay. There were flaws in some form or another, be that with the writing itself, the characterization, the pacing… Something about this book did not quite sit right. I actually did enjoy parts or all of this book, but aforementioned flaws were too pervasive for them not to be the focus. Unable to suspend my disblief.
★
I did not like this book. I do not reccomend this book, and I probably have some form of beef with this book. Whether that's because of the themes, the writing, or the way the author chose to portray the characters or the story… Fact of the matter is, it's not for me. That's not to say that no one should read it, but I personally did not like this book or find it enjoyable.
Bonus: Half Stars
For the ½ stars… It's just inbetween. I like to be exact. For example, if a book is better than three stars but not quite at the four star level, it gets 3.5 stars. It a book has multiple flaws or plotholes but still feels interesting ot read? 2.5 stars. If I become obsessed with this book? 5 stars.
